Sing for Fundraising!

Katy Perry and David Archuleta to sing at fundraising concert for Typhoon Ketsana/Ondoy victims.

After the cancellation of Katy Perry's October 3rd concert in Manila, Philippines, due to the consequences of the tropical storm known as Ondoy or Katsana, it is being reported that the singer of "Waking Up in Vegas" will now perform at a fundraising concert for the victims along with American Idol runner up and current teen pop star David Archuleta.

Outlets like Inquirer.net and online music community ATRL cite MTV Philippines and MTV as sources, according to which the Katy Perry and David Archuleta concert will now be "bigger and better." Other reports set the tentative concert date at October 17th, and inform that the raised funds would go to the Red Cross in order to help the victims of the natural tragedy.

Although this is still officially unconfirmed news, it is safe to say that, were the reports true, the concert would certainly be of great help to those affected by Typhoon Ketsana/Ondoy.

The first-ever showdown of outstanding young Pinoys was a huge success with three aspiring music video directors hailed as winners in the 1st SOP Music Video Awards. The awarding ceremony was held at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City, and aired on GMA-7 last November 18.

Aspiring music video directors Richard Librada and Darlene Abigail Quito, both students of Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) and Roman Perez of University of the Philippines claimed the eight prestigious awards given out by SOP, the noontime variety show of the Kapuso Network.

Roman Perez (UP) won the Best Production Design for the music video of Aicelle Santos' song "Ikaw Pa Rin" while Darlene Abigail Quito (PUP) bagged the Best Video Editing and Texter's Choice awards for the music video of "Candlelight Romance" performed by Yasmien Kurdi.

The team behind the music video "All Out of Love" led by Richard Librada, an 18-year-old student of PUP, bagged most the awards including Best Videography, Best Concept/Story, Best Music Video, and Best Director. Dennis Trillo, who is part of Librada's team, won the Special Citation for Best Performance by An Artist for his remarkable performance in the music video.

The 1st SOP Music Video Awards is this year's feature of the grand annual musical event competition SOP Music awards. For four years now, SOP Music Awards has become the venue in recognizing exceptional talents of Filipinos and acknowledging artists and significant performances that uplifts the quality and standards of Original Pilipino Music (OPM).

This year, SOP Music Awards, through SOP Music Video Awards, has fulfilled its goal in discovering young aspiring music video directors from different university and colleges all over the country.

Other finalists in the first-ever SOP Music Video Awards were Elaine Melody Samonte (St. Paul College, QC), Ademar Garchitorena (University of San Jose Recoletos, Cebu), Maan Leynes (Centro Escolar University), and Nestor Abrogena (UP Diliman).

The awarding ceremony was hosted by SOP mainstays Ogie Alcasid, Regine Velasquez, and Jaya. Throughout the three-hour program, SOP co-hosts Karylle, Jay-R, Jolina Magdangal, Dingdong Dantes, Rufa Mae Quinto, and twins Richard and Raymond Gutierrez gave special numbers and provided trivia to entertain the audience.

Marimar star Marian Rivera led the opening number while the Pinoy Pop Superstar winners belted out with their songs as intermission numbers. StarStruck alumni Mark Herras, Marky Cielo, LJ Reyes, and Ryza Cenon performed an energetic dance number for the crowd composed mostly of university students and their supporters. The cast of Kamandag also came in full force while wearing their elaborate costumes as a way of promoting the fantaserye involving mortals and half-animal creatures.

Their special guest during the event was Movie and Television Review and Classification Board chairperson Consoliza Laguardia. In fact, during the portion called Sobrang OJ, the whole cast of SOP serenaded the MTRCB chair and made light of her job as a censor.

The masterpieces of the SOP Music Video Awards finalists were judged by three of the country's well-renowned directors: Bb. Joyce Bernal, Rico Gutierrez, and Louie Ignacio. The Texter's Choice Award, meanwhile, were based solely on the viewers' text votes.

Taylor Swift Humiliated by Kanye West at the VMAs

West interrupted Swift's acceptance speech at Sunday's VMAs and said that Beyonce deserved to win.

"I was standing on the stage, and I was really excited because I had just won the award," Swift said after Sunday's show at Radio City Music Hall. "And then I was really excited because Kanye West was on the stage. And then I wasn't so excited anymore after that."

Beyonce, nominated for best female video for "Single Ladies," was bested by Swift, the best-selling artist of the year outside of Jackson. The 19-year-old was giddy when she won for her clip "You Belong With Me," saying, "I always wondered what it would be like to maybe win one of these someday, but never actually thought it would happen."

But West ruined her moment when he jumped on stage at Radio City Music Hall.

"Taylor, I'm really happy for you, and I'm gonna let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time," he said, as a shocked Beyonce looked on and the crowd began to boo West.

A crestfallen Swift didn't finish her speech, but the crowd applauded her anyway. She later performed "You Belong With Me" in a subway station.

Swift later got her chance, courtesy of Beyonce, who won video of the year for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." When she won, she recalled that she won her first VMA as a 17-year-old as part of Destiny's Child.

"I remember how excited I was," she said. "I'd like Taylor to come out and have her moment."

Music Spoof!

"President Barack Obama 2009 Inauguration and Address" on a Beyoncé - Single Ladies SPOOF by Pres. Obama's Impersonator.

What is a spoof?

noun:
a joke, or deception
a light parody or satire

Etymology: orig. a game involving hoaxing and nonsense, invented (c. 1889)

by Arthur Roberts (1852-1933), Brit comedian

In contemporary usage, it is a work created to mock, comment on, or poke fun at an original work, its subject, author, style, or some other target, by means of humorous, satiric or ironic imitation. Often, the most satisfying element of a good parody is seeing others mistake it for the genuine article. It may be found in art or culture, including literature, music and cinema.

DARNA’S TOP 5

Professor Edna T. Bernabe, a communication professor, former chairperson of the Department of Broadcast Communication and is said to be the “future dean” of the College of Communication lists down her top 5 music artists of all time.

Professor Edna, also called “darna” by her colleagues and students sang to the tune of “paminsan minsan” as she stated Richard Reynoso as her 5th most favorite artist of all time. Richard Reynoso is a famous singer and actor in the ‘80’s.

Darna’s 4th favorite artist is the concert king, Mr. Martin Nievera. The concert king’s “Kahit Isang Saglit” really touches her heart.

Coming to her 3rd favorite artist is Cliff Richard with his very popular song, Ocean Deep. Cliff Richard is an English singer-songwriter and entrepreneur. He dominated the British popular music scene in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Down to her 2nd most favorite artist is Stephen Bishop with his song, “It Might Be You”. Stephen Bishop is an American singer-songwriter, actor, and guitarist. He had a major hit in 1977 with the song "On and On", which was a #11 hit in the U.S.; his other hits include "Save It for a Rainy Day," "Everybody Needs Love" and "It Might Be You", the theme from the movie, Tootsie.

And finally, her most favorite artist is no other than David Soul, an American actor and singer, and with his chart topper song, “Don’t Give Up on Us”.

Tony Macaulay written and produced "Don't Give Up on Us" was a worldwide smash, spending four weeks at #1 on the UK Singles Chart in January 1977 and a single week at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1977. In addition, the song spent one week at #1 on the U.S. adult contemporary chart. "Don't Give Up on Us" was rated #93 in VH1's 100 Greatest One-hit Wonders.

Zsa Zsa Padilla revived this in 1998, making it the first Filipino revival. Piolo Pascual also covered this song for the soundtrack of the same movie title in the Philippines.

Mart as a Music Fan

Prof. Mart Elias Carlo Maranon

A fresh-graduate of PUP-College of Communication (Batch 2009) with flying colors! After graduating, he automatically had a job at IFM93.9 and a Part-time Professor for his Alma Mater. And luckily, our Professor in the corporate world of Corporate Communication!

We asked for the former-Student-Assistant-turned-Professor about the kind of music he loves. And he gave us his top 5 favorite artist.

The Certified-Platinum recording artist and Philippines’ multi-awarded Big-Band Crooner Richard Poon is his Top 5 Pick .

The unique, fresh brand of music, and cool, soothing voice has made him charmingly stand out in a crowded sea of pop male balladeers and made Richard Poon one of the young Professor's favorite. Richard sings the "Standards"— these are immortal melodies written in the 1950's that have survived the test of time, popularized by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Matt Monro, Paul Anka, Nat King Cole, and most recently, Harry Connick, Jr. and Michael Buble.

The CompanY has been his 4th Pick. The Company as the Philippine's Premiere Vocal Ensemble captured his heart by their revival of songs and the collections of classical music.

Sir Mart is a fan of Acapella singers! Actually, the country's premier pop-capella group, THE AKAFELLAS is his Top3. This group of fellas here is composed of men of different levels of voices making up a good music in acapella, ofcourse.

"Concert King" Martin Nievera is his 2nd Favorite Artist. Who would not like him? With the kind of voice he has, very versatile, relax and sings from the heart. And his music? Easy to ride on and jive with.

And lastly, on the Top Spot Prof. Maranon's Favorite Music Artist is...

Josh Groban!
We are all captivated with his flawless lyrical baritone. Josh Groban is known around the world as a classically influenced pop singer and widely known for his angelic face as he sings "Angels brought me here".

Truly, after hearing his Picks of his favorite music artists, I, once again fall in love with these hitmakers!

The Fray release Kanye West's ‘Heartless’

Kanye West’s hit single 'Heartless’ was chosen by The Fray as their 'cover track’, which featured on their thrilling 'Radio One Live Lounge’ performance in February (16th). Following the premiere of their chilling version of 'Heartless’ on Radio One, the track received an unprecedented amount of radio airplay.

As a result and due to overwhelming public demand, The Fray hit the studio to record another version of 'Heartless’ to release on both sides of the Atlantic.

Although not featured on any of the band’s albums, 'Heartless’ has taken on a life of its own and is now a firm staple of their rousing live shows. In the US the track has sold over 125,000 downloads and is featured in the Top 25 at US alternative radio.

The track will be available as part of a Digital E.P. from September 28th. The genial video for 'Heartless’ will be available to download from September 14th.

The Fray’s latest eponymously titled album, which has already sold over a million copies worldwide, went straight into the Top Ten in the UK and was quickly followed up with a sold out whistle-stop tour of the UK. The band return to the UK live scene in the autumn with a one-off sold out show at the Royal Albert Hall, October 20th.

The Fray - Isaac Slade (vocals, piano), Joe King (guitar, vocals), Ben Wysocki (drums) and Dave Welsh (guitar) - took the UK by storm in 2007 with hit single 'How To Save A Life’, which sold nearly half a million copies and reached number 4 in the UK charts.

The Denver-based quartet also enjoyed worldwide success with their Grammy nominated debut album, which sold over 3.2 million copies.

MAROON 5 pictures... :)

by: Joanne Fugoso

MAROON 5 Released their Second Studio Album

Maroon 5 is a Grammy Award-winning American pop rock band. Formed in Los Angeles, United States, the group comprises five members: Adam Levine (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), James Valentine (lead guitar, backing vocals), Jesse Carmichael (keyboards, rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Mickey Madden (bass guitar), and Matt Flynn (drums, percussion).

Maroon 5 has won several awards for its debut album Songs About Jane. Released in June 2002, the album enjoyed major chart success, going gold, platinum, and triple platinum in many countries around the world. In support of Songs About Jane, Maroon 5 toured extensively throughout 2003 – 2005, in which a live album was released, entitled Live - Friday the 13th. Original member Ryan Dusick left the band in September 2006, due to injuries sustained by the constant touring, and was replaced by Matt Flynn.

After a hiatus from the music scene, Maroon 5 released their second studio album, It Won’t Be Soon Before Long in May 2007, five years after Songs About Jane. The second set debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with first week sales of nearly half a million. The album has since gone on to become platinum with 1.8 million albums sold in the United States alone and over 3.5 million world wide.

DREAM THEATER on Tour!

Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band from Long Island, New York formed in 1985 under the name “Majesty” by John Myung, John Petrucci, and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, which they all dropped out of to support the band. Though a number of lineup changes followed, the three original members remain today along with James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess.

Dream Theater has become one of the most successful progressive metal bands since the height of the genre in the mid-1970s. Although the band has had a few successful hits (notably PlayPull Me Under in the early 1990s, which received extensive MTV rotation), they have mostly stayed underground for their career, feeding off support from their fans.

Dream Theater’s (commonly abbreviated ‘DT’) two highest selling albums are the gold selling Images and Words (1992), although it reached only #61 on the Billboard 200 charts, and Awake (1994) which reached #32 on the Billboard 200. Recently Systematic Chaos entered US Billboard 200 at #19. Dream Theater has sold over two million albums in the U.S., and over 8 million albums and DVDs worldwide.

In January of 2005, the band obtained their first United States platinum disc (representing 100 000 DVDs sold) with Live At Budokan, recorded April 2004 in Tokyo, Japan.

COLDPLAY on Tour!

Coldplay

Coldplay is a British alternative rock band, formed in London, United Kingdom in 1997. The band comprises vocalist and pianist Chris Martin, lead guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, and drummer Will Champion.

Having released four successful albums, (all of which debuted at #1 on the UK album chart) Coldplay have also achieved great success with their singles, such as Yellow, Speed of Sound, the Grammy-winning Clocks and the US and UK #1 single Viva La Vida.

Frontman Chris Martin credits 1980s Norwegian pop band a-ha for inspiring him to form his own band.

Coldplay’s early material was often compared to that of Jeff Buckley and Radiohead, while also drawing comparisons to U2 and Travis. Since the release of the band’s debut album, Parachutes (2000), Coldplay has also drawn influence from other sources, including Echo and the Bunnymen and George Harrison on A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002) and Johnny Cash and Kraftwerk for X&Y (2005).

Coldplay are one of very few current British music acts to achieve major success in North America. Despite their large worldwide popularity, the band has remained protective of how their music is used in the media, refusing its use for product endorsements. In the past, Coldplay had turned down multi-million dollar contracts from Gatorade, Diet Coke, and Gap, who wanted to use the songs “Yellow”, Trouble, and Don’t Panic respectively. According to Martin, “We wouldn’t be able to live with ourselves if we sold the songs’ meanings like that.” On the other hand, “Yellow” has been used to back TV trailers for “The Simpsons” and “Viva la Vida” from their latest album features on the current iTunes TV advert.

Country's Hottest Crossover Artist

Taylor Swift is the biggest country star of 2009.

Her sophomore album, "Fearless" (Big Machine), has spent the most weeks at no. 1 on Billboard's Top 200 this year and has been certified triple platinum. Also, her single, "You Belong to Me", sits at no. 1 on the country charts and no. 2 on the pop charts, and that's what maybe the most impressive.

While country music always has its share of stars, the genre hasn't seen this kind of crossover success since Shania Twain's heyday a decade ago; even then, Twain, whom Swift counts as a major influence, didn't match the 19-year-old's across-the-board appeal. Swift looks as comfortable singing with '80's rockers Def Leppard as she does hanging out with her pal Miley Cyrus.

What makes it more special is, though, is that she has done it all essentially on her own terms. "I wrote every song on it. I co-produced it. So to have people go out and actually buy it? It's wonderful." she said.

For Swift, songwriting is a major part of her story. The Pennsylvania native was first signed to a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music at age 14. By the time she reached 17, she became the youngest person to write and sing a no. 1 country single entirely on her own when "Our Song" topped Billboard's country single's chart.

Swift sold over 600, 000 copies of "Fearless" in its opening week in November, making it her first no. 1 pop album and proving that country music's appeal far broader than many expected.

It proved, in impossible to dispute numbers, what many country artists had always said - that their music is just as viable in the pop world as any other games.

Michael Jackson's 51st birthday to be his Burial Day

Michael Jackson's body will be laid to rest on August 29, the day the King of Pop would have turned 51.

Joe Jackson, 80, said the birthday burial at Los Angeles' Forest Lawn Cemetery would be a private event, although he could not say which family members would be present.
The singing star's interment is to be held more than two months after his June 25 death from heart failure.

Authorities are investigating whether prescription drugs played a role in death the death of Jackson, 50, and have focused on the role played by his personal physician Conrad Murray.
Murray was present at the time Jackson died and reportedly has admitted prescribing powerful anesthetics to his world-famous client.

Joe Jackson, who spoke to AFP in Las Vegas, said he plans to return to the city immediately after the burial service to attend a charity fundraiser in the famed Palms Casino Resort.
The event, "Las Vegas Celebrates The Music of Michael Jackson," is to showcase Las Vegas Strip entertainers singing hits made famous by the pop icon.

Later that day, the Jackson family patriarch is to receive a celebrity star in his late son's honor from the Brenden Theatres, a cinema at the Palms frequented by Jackson and his children.
The theater also has planned a charity screening of the 1988 film "Moonwalker," a feature film of Jackson concert footage and music video clips, with proceeds going to public school music education programs in Las Vegas.

Bow Wow making music with Lil Wayne's Cash Money

Young rapper Bow Wow is officially out of retirement.
After announcing his departure from the music game to focus on his acting career earlier this year, the 22-year-old sent out a Twitter message that he has joined Cash Money Records' stable of artists.

"It's official, I'm a Cash Money Millionaire," Bow Wow, who had parted ways with longtime label Columbia Records earlier this year, told his thousands of followers on Twitter.

In previous postings, he explained that he was deciding between two recording options: signing to T.I.'s Grand Hustle camp through Atlantic Records or relaunching So So Def with longtime mentor/producer Jermaine Dupri.

Bow Wow's last album, "New Jack City II," for which he reunited with Dupri, sold a meek 73,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Lady Gaga in Manila

MANILA GOES GAGA OVER LADY GAGA! Excitement filled Araneta Coliseum. With the defeaning sound of screams, the audience gave as much energy as Lady Gaga did.

When Lady Gaga started singing, there was silence. They all listened to Gaga's amazing voice. Boy did she put up a show - constant costume change, extraordinary dance moves, a bubble-filled lucite piano and hot male dancers!

"I'm your biggest fan I'll follow you until you love me, pa pa paparazzi", everybody in the stadium sang their hearts out. Not a moment did she let us down.

With the little space that she had, she performed her up-tempo dance moves wearing '70's pop glam outfits and signature tanga. Wowing the audience with her powerful pipes, she was ultra sexy in her nude latex bikini.

The new Pop Princess rendered an acoustic "Poker Face" wearing a Hussein Chalayan bubble dress and ended the show with the original version of the hit song.

Lady Gaga was overwhelmed with the warm audience reception and said that she cried six times at the first few songs because of it. She kept on saying how much she loved Manila.

"See you next year, Manila!". It didn't look like she wanted to leave and it kept us wanting for more.

King of Pop's Impersonator on the Stage

Frederick Henry, a well-known Michael Jackson impersonator has become so hot at the Stratosphere in Las Vegas to the point that he needed a lot of security to keep his fans from brimming him. Henry has been so thankful because they’re showing love.

The King of Pop's death has had an electrifying effect on business for those who make their living imitating Jackson in all his moon walking glory.

Henry became a full-time Jackson impersonator since 1995 and took the act abroad during Jackson's later years. Things were tough then in the United States as the Icon battled accusations of child molestation.

Everything, Henry said, changed when Jackson died June 25.
Fourteen years after getting his start as a "Mike," Henry said he never gets tired of performing as "the greatest entertainer that ever lived."

"I love it. I love it!" he said. "Plus, the check's nice." :)
